Pusher Trailer Review

Film: Pusher Trilogy (1997 -2005)
Trailer Genre:
Crime/Drugs Horror
Mark after viewing:
7.5/10

What happens in the trailer?
The trailer shows various characters and plot points from the three films, to give and overall theme and story of the trilogy in order to entice the audience to find out what happens.

Which positive, clever or interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What generic features are fulfilled well?
There are a few aspects of the trailer that were done well that I noticed; the first being that the trailers select use of shots made the audience want to find out more, as it used key plot points to give a hint to the story without ruining it and leaves a lot to the audiences imagination, the scenes featured are also interesting bits of the films that are either gory, rude, violent or contain drug use; this interests the audience and makes them want to see the extended version of the scene to know what happened and why. Another aspect is how the pacing and quick editing of the trailer don’t make it dull but exciting this mixed with the contrast of sudden slowed down text on screen from reviews from key magazines, helps the trailer get broken up into manageable sections that the audience can process after the quick pacing and onslaught of images.

An aspect of the trailer that was done really well was the soundtrack, it fitted the theme of the trailer and movie and was synced up with the pace and the constant changing of shots to add to the excitement that the film promised to bring If you watched it. The dialogue used in the trailer is also very select, it hints at story plots and adds the tension and excitement of the trailer and mixed with the use of scenes and soundtrack it makes the audience want to know what the character was talking about and why.

Which aspects of the trailer did you think were unsuccessful, and would put off its target audience? How is it disappointing?
There were a few aspects however, that could have been better such as the speed of the pacing, it can be seen as being too quick, as not everyone can take in and process what they have just scene, so instead of inducing excitement the trailer can induce confusion in the audience – another aspect linked the pacing was also the scenes that were picked, even though brilliant and interesting scenes it made the characters hard to identify from each other e.g. who’s the main character throughout the trilogy, it also makes the overall narrative of the trailer and the movie hard to follow at certain points again adding to the confusion that the quick pacing already brings. This brings me onto the final aspect that made the trailer slightly worse than it had the potential to be, this was how the pacing was suddenly introduced, there was no build-up it was all introduced and in your face right from the start, which just grab the attention of the audience, but also due to the suddenness of it, it can confuse and disorientate some of the audience so they won’t understand of process what they are supposed to be watching.

What was the trailer’s average score in class? Why did it receive that mark?
The trailers average score was around 7.5-8, this was down to how exciting the trailer looked due to its high pacing and the selection of interesting scenes, this seemed to counter-act the downside that the pacing was suddenly introduced and that the scenes didn’t really offer any coherent narration.
